Nickolay Vasilievich Ilovaisky came of a cossack family.
He was enlisted to the military service in the age of 6 as a private cossack.
In the age of 8 he took part in his first military march to the Crimea for suppressing the Crimea Tatars that supported Turks.
When he was 10 he was promoted to the rank of esaul (cossack captain).
In 1784 Ilovaisky with his regiment was sent to the Caucasuian frontier line.

During the Russian-Turkish war of 1787 Â 1784 Ilovaisky distinguished in the capturing of the Turkish fortresses Khagibey (the old name of Odessa), Bendery and Ismail.

After this war he participated in the second Polish campaign and in the Russian army march to Persia in 1796.
In 1799 Ilovaisky was promoted to the rank of major-general and became the field-ataman of the Don cossack troops on the Caucasian frontier line.

From 1802 to 1805 Ilovaisky was the field-ataman of four Don cossack regiments on the western frontier line of the Russian Empire.

In 1806 -1807 Ilovaisky took part in the campaign against France. Cossack regiments under his command fought at Langenau, Guttstadt, Heilsberg and Friedland.

After this campaign Ilovaisky was sent to the South, to the Moldavian army. There he participated in the war against Turks and distinguished in the battles of Brailov and Rassevat.

At the fortress Shumla Ilovaisky's cossacks distinguished most of all capturing 18 enemy banners.

In the beginning of the war of 1812 Ilovaisky with his cossacks was in the retreating 2nd Russian army of General Bagration participating in numerous daily affairs with French.
After Napoleon left Moscow Ilovaisky's cossacks chased retreating French army.

In 1813 after the Bautzen battle Ilovaisky was given leave for the reasons of health and went to the Don.

In 1815 - 1816 Ilovaisky was an ordering ataman (nakaznoy ataman) of the Don Cossacks Troops. He retired in 1818.

Among many other awards Ilovaisky had the Order of St.George of 3rd Class and a golden sword with diamonds.
