The battle at Tarutino, October,6
(The picture by Hess)

When Napoleon only was going to leave Moscow, the battle at Tarutino happened. The Russian troops stood on the bank of the river Chernishnia, and on the opposite bank there was the French van-guard under the command of Marshal Murat.
One day General Tol saw the Russian troops had the very advantage-groung to attack the French. He reported Kutuzov about this, he hesitated much, but Generals Bennigsen, Baghowut, Konovnitsin took Tol's side and made Kutuzov to permit this action.
On October,6 early in the morning the cossacks of General Orlov-Denisov attacked the French swiftly. The French not waiting this attack were confused. Then the infantry of Generals Eugene of Wurtemberg and Baghowut attacked the enemy too. But at this time Marshal Murst could put his troops in order and the Russian infantry was met with strong resistance. In this attack General Baghowut was killed. Both sides had the heavy losses in this battle, the French troops retreated, but they were not crushed and retreated in full order.
On this picture in the centre you see General Orlov-Denisov in red guard-cossack uniform on a white horse.
