Marshal Davout in the Chudov Monastery

Marshal Davout in the Chudov Monastery
(The picture by Vereschagin)

On this picture you see Marshal Davout in the Chudov Monastery.
Why did Marshal Davout choose for his staff just the Chudov Monastery and its altar for his study? Maybe because he did not get accustomed to pay attention to surroundings at all. Marshal Davout was a severe man, knew the military art perfectly well and was devoted to Napoleon firmly. He knew Napoleon from childhood: they both studied together in the Brienne military school. Davout was constanlty very busy and had no interest in such things as elementary comfort. And it did not matter for him where to make his headqurters: in an old and ramshackle peasant hut or in one of the oldest Russian Monasteries.
