"The chess are ready, the game will begin tomorrow" - said Napoleon returned to his tent after inspecting the Borodino field on the eve of the day of the great battle. On September,26 early in the morning Napoleon with his retinue rode to the Shevardino redoubt from where he planned to manage his "game of chess". Here the Emperor and his retinue dismounted and took their observation post.
