Dmitry Dmitrievich Shepelev ( 1771 - 1841 ) Lieutenant-General Dmitry Dmitrievich Shepelev came of a Russian gentry family. He was enlisted to the military service in 1782 in the rank of sergeant to the Life-Guard Preobrazhensky regiment. In 1792 he got his first officer rank of praporschik (warrant officer) and in 1793 he was transferred to the Mariupolsky Light Horse regiment in the rank of second-major. He got his first military experience in the compaign against Polish confederates in 1794 and was decorated with the Order of St.George of 4th Class. In this campaign he took part in the assault of Prague (a suburb of Warsaw, do not mix up with the city of Prague in Czech). In this combat he commanded a battalion of the Nizovsky Infantry regiment and was seriously wounded. In 1796 he participated in the Persian march of the Russian army and commanded a cavalry squadron. In 1799 he was in the Russian troops in Switzerland and got there the rank of colonel. The reign of Emperor Alexander I began for Dmitry Shepelev of becoming an Aide-de-Camp of the Emperor in 1802. Dmitry Shepelev took part in the campaign of 1805 against France, he was a brigade-major in the Corps of General Buxhowden and participated in the battle of Austerlitz. In 1806 he was appointed the Chief of the Grodnenky Hussar regiment. In 1807 Dmitry Dmitrievich Shepelev took part in another campaign against France, participated in many battles and distinguished at Friedland. On May,24,1807 he was promoted to the rank of Major-General. For the campaign of 1807 Shepelev got the Order of St.George of 3rd Class. In 1808-1809 Shepelev took part in the Russian-Swedish war and retired in 1810. He returned to the army in July of 1812. During the retreat of the Russian army from Borodino to Tarutino Spelev commanded the Guard Cavalry Brigade (the Life Guard Horse and Cavalry Guard (Cavalergardsky) regiments). During the retreat of Napoleon's army from Russia Shepelev participated in the battles of Maloyaroslavets and Krasny. In December of 1812 Shepelev was appointed the commander of the vanguard of troops of General Wittgenstein. After the capture of Konigsberg Shepelev was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-general. In 1813 Shepelev participated in the siege of Hamburg and after he stayed in Germany and was occupied with re-forming of Russian troops. In 1815 Shepelev was appointed the commander of the 2nd Hussar Division. On April,2,1816 he retired for reasons of health, but in 1826 he returned to the army and served in cavalry.
