Alexey Grigorievich Scherbatov ( 1776 - 1848 ) Prince, General of Infantry, General-Aide-de-Camp Alexey Grigorievich Scherbatov came of an old family of Moscow princes. From 1782 he was enlisted to the Life-Guard Semenovsky regiment. He began his active service in this regiment in 1792 in the rank of warrant officer. In 1799 he was promoted to the rank of colonel and in 1801 to the rank of major-general, but a short time after he retired for family reasons. He returned to the military service in 1805. Scherbatov participated in the war of 1807-1807 against France. In this campaign he distinguished in the battle of Golimin and got the Order of St.George of 4th Class for it. Especially he distinguished himself in the battle of Friedland and after the battle he was promoted to the rank of major-general and was rewarded with the gold sword decorated with diamonds and with inscription "For Courage". In the Russian-Swedish war of 1808-1809 Scherbatov commanded the detachment in the corps of General Bagration. In 1809 and 1810 Scherbatov was in the Danube army and fought against Turks. He was seriously wounded in the storm of the Turkish fortress of Shumla. In the beginning of the campaign of 1812 he commanded the 18th Infatry Division in the Third Western Army of Admiral Chichagov and took part in the battles of Brest, Kobrin, Gorodechna and others. He distinguished in the combats at Borisov and Studenka and was decorated with the Order of St.George of 3rd class. On November,16,1812 Scherbatov was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-general. In spring of 1813 Scherbatov took part in the siege of the city of Torun and in the battles of Konigswart and Bautzen and in the last battle he was seriously wounded. In the second half of the campaign of 1813 Scherbatov commanded the 6th Infantry Corps in the Silesian Army and distinguished in the battles of the river Katzbach and Levenberg and got the Order of Alexander Nevsky. Also he distinguished in the battle of Leipzig and was rewarded with the gold sword with diamonds for it. Scherbatov took very active part in the campaign of 1814 too, distinguished in the storm of Paris and was decorated with the Order of St.George of 2nd class. After the war Scherbatov stayed the commander of the 6th Infantry Corps. On August,10,1816 Scherbatov got the rank General Aide-de-Camp. On December,23,1823 he was promoted to the rank of general of infantry and in 1826 was appointed the commander of the 2nd Infantry Corps. General Scherbatov took part in supressing of the uprising of 1831 in Poland and for capture of Warsaw he was rewarded with the gold sword with diamonds and laurels. In 1835 Scherbatov retired for reasons of health and came back to the military service in 1839, that year he became a member of the State Council. In 1844 Scherbatov was appointed the Moscow General-Governor. In 1848 he retired finally and a short time after died. He was buried in the Donskoy Monastery in Moscow.
