Ivan Nikitich Inzov ( 1768 - 1845 ) General of Infantry Ivan Nikitich Inzov grew as an adopted son in the family of Princes Yury and Nickolay Trubetskoys. He began his military service in 1785 as a cadet in the Sumskoy Light Horse regiment. In the rank of podporuchik (second lieutenant) he was transferred to the Moscow Grenadier regiment with that he took part in the Russian-Turkish war of 1787 - 1791. He participated in the storms of fortresses Bendery and Ismail. For his service in the battle of Machin Inzov was promoted to the rank of poruchik (lieutenant) and appointed an aide-de-camp of Commander-in-Chief Prince Repnin. In 1797 Inzov was transferred to the Apsheronsky Infantry regiment in the rank of colonel. Inzov took part in the Italian and Swiss campaigns under the command of Field-Marshal Alexander Suvorov. In 1800 Inzov was appointed the commander of the Apsheronsky Infantry regiment in the rank of colonel. In 1804 he was promoted to the rank of major-general and became the chief of the Kiev Grenadier regiment. In the campaign of 1805 against France General Inzov was general-on-duty of Michail Kutuzov In the beginning of the campaign of 1806 he with his regiment was near Brest-Litovsk and covered the retreat of the Russian troops. For his successful actions during the retreat he got the Order of St.George. In 1810 General Inzov commanded a brigade of the 10th Infantry Division and took part in the Russian-Turkish war, he participated in the siege of the fortress Silistria and in the combats at Shumla, for this campaign he was rewarded with a gold sword with diamonds. In this campaign General Inzov became known as a skilled and brave commander. In the beginning of the war of 1812 General Inzov was the chief of staff in the 3rd Russian army of General Tormasov. In September,1812 Inzov was appointed the commander of the 9th Infantry Division and took part in the battle at the river Berezina. For the campaign of 1812 General Inzov decorated with the Order of St.Vladimir of 2nd class. Inzov took part in the campaign of 1813-1814. For his services in the siege of fortress Torun he got the Order of St.George of 3rd class. Especially General Inzov distinguished in the battle of Bautzen, then he was appointed a general-on-duty in the Polish army (a Russian army based in Poland) and participated in the battles of Drezden, Leipzig and the siege of Hamburg. After the end of war French King Louis XVIII decorated General Inzov with the Order of Legion of Honour for his philantropic attitude to French prisoners of war. In 1815 Inzov was appointed the chief of staff of the 2nd Army, and the next year- the commander of the 18th Infantry Division. From 1820 General Inzov was the Tsar's Vice-Regent in Bessarabia (the modern Moldova). He was on this post for 27 years and proved himself to be an excellent administrator and a humane person. In 1828 Inzov was promoted to the rank of general of infantry. Also General Inzov had good relations with famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. During his southern exile Pushkin lived in the house of General Inzov.
