Coming back from the Petrovsky Palace (The picture by Vereschagin) On September,4 in the evening Napoleon got to the Petrovsky Palace where he was in full safety. On September,6 the fire began to die down because there was nothing to be on fire more and also it had been pouring with rain. Napoleon got to know the Kremlin remained in safety and decided to come back there. You see the guard of honour moving before him, the Emperor himself riding on the white horse with his retinue behind him. And around them there is a terrible picture: the shapeless ruin of houses still breathing smoke and fire, charred trees and logs, all the road is strewed with some fragments; the columns of smoky fire remind of the giant torches lighting up their way... |
