The fire in the Kremlin (The picture by Vereschagin) On September,2 Napoleon's troops entered Moscow and the next day the Emperor himself rode to Moscow and stayed with his staff in the Kremlin. But a short time after the fires began in many places of the ancient Russian capital one after another. All the efforts to put out the fire were without any results. The wind raised the huge tongues of flame to the sky and scattered the burning logs and shafts of sparks over the city. They fell on the Kremlin like rain and threatened to destroy this ancient Russian holy place. |
