The War Council in the Phili Village (The picture by Kivshenko) After the Borodino battlte the Russian army retreated behind the town of Mozhaisk on the night of October,27. On September,1 at 5 p.m. in the village of Phili, not far from Moscow in the hut occupied by Kutuzov the well-known war council took place. The main question was to retreat again and let Napoleon takke Moscow or to give a new battle near Moscow. On this picture you can see Kutuzov sitting in an arm-chair, behind him there is his Aide-de-Camp Kaisarov; in the corner under the icons there is Barclay de Tolly, General Ermolov is standing at the table and speaking. On the left of the front bench there is General Bennigsen (wearing the blue ribbon of the Order of St.Andrew). |
