The picture of the battle at Lubino (Valutina Hill) you see on this page shows very vividly the terrible spirit of the horrors of war. You see a quiet wide hilly Russian plain with forests, where not long before nothing disturbed the calmness of usual peasant life. But suddenly this peaceful land turned into the field of the bloody battle. The thick smoke covered the country, the thunder of guns was heard from behind the hills, bullets and cannon-balls were whistling in the air, the ground shuddered of the tramp of horses and marching columns of troops. The ground that knew only the water of rains or early-dews before this day, was stained with blood, and groans of wounded soldiers rose to the Heavens. The Death reaped a rich harvest...
