The Battle Of Kliastitsy. July,19,1812 (The picture by Hess) After it had become clear that the Drissa fortified camp had the very disadvantage positions and the Russian army left it, the Corps of Russian troops under Count Petr Christianovich Wittgenstein was sent to cover the way to St.Petersburg. Very soon Wittgenstein got into a very hard situation: the village of Kliastitsy was occupied by the French troops. On this picture you can see the final stage of the battle. After the fierce and bloody fighting the Russian troops gained the victory. On the picture you see grenadiers of the Pavlovsky regiment in attack. This regiment distinguished best of all in this battle. This battle was one of the first Russian victories in this campaign that was very important for the spirit of the whole Russian army that was retreating then. |
