Ivan Ivanovich Diebitsch-Zabalkansky ( Johann Karl Fredrich Anton) (1785-1831) General-Field-Marshal The son of the Prussian officer, passed to the Russian service. Studied in the Berlin Cadet Military School. In 1801 he was enlisted to the Russian Military service as a warrant officer in The Life-Guard Semenovsky regiment. He participated in the Russian-French wars and the Russian campaign of 1812. In this campaign he could neutralize the Prussian troops , that was in the Napoleonic Army, during their retreat from Russia. During of the campaign of 1813-1814 he was ober-quartermaster of corps and general-quartermaster of Field-Marshal Wittgenstein's army. From 1815 he was the Chief of Staff of the 1st army. In 1823 he was a member of State Counsil. Since 1824 Diebitsch was the chief of General Staff. When Nickolay I became the Russian Emperor, Diebitsch was of his confidential persons. He reported Nickolay about the officers (Decembrists) prepairing an uprising and arrested some of them in the 2nd Army. Diebitsch was a member of the Supreme Court in the prosecution of the Decembrists. During the Russian-Turkish war of 1828 - 1829 he was attached to Commander-in-Chief Wittgenstein practically commanding the Russian troops. From February of 1829 he became the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Army in the Balkans. He distinguished in the very successful march across the Balkan mountains just to the approaches to the Turkish capital. This march determined the result of the whole war. For this campaign he got the title Zabalkansky (Transbalkanian) and was promoted to the rank of general field-marshal in 1829. In December of 1830 Diebitsch was appointed the Commande-in-Chief of the Russian Army sent to Poland for supressing the Polish uprising of 1830 - 1831. But in 1831 he died of cholera violented in the Russian army. Diebitsch was a follower of the Prussian military school and notable for his ambition. Diebitsch is one of the four bearers of the Order of St. George of the whole 4 classes.
